The atticus Institute è il secondo lavoro del regista Chris Sparling che come sceneggiatore si è fatto notare per i film ATM e Buried-Sepolto vivo ,una pellicola indipendente dal budget ristretto e con un cast di attori poco conosciuti ( L’unico attore che ho riconosciuto è William Mapother , Ethan di Lost ).
Girato come se fosse un vero e proprio documentario con immagini di repertorio racconta di un laboratorio di psicologia dell’ università della Pennsylvania, specializzato nei fenomeni paranormali ,sottofinanziato e poco considerato fino a che non si imbattono in un caso a dir poco sensazionale di una donna che manifesta strani poteri.
Nulla di particolarmente originale ,The Atticus Institute non è certo il primo titolo che mischia sacro e profano giocando sul filo fra possessione e paranormale. Di certo non lo aiuta nemmeno l’aver intrapreso la via del falso documentario, visto che è un genere che negli ultimi hanno sta intasando il mercato dell’orrore costringendo i fan ad un calvario per selezionare le opere migliori e per ogni film di questo livello ( discreto ) ne troviamo 2 o 3 veramente pessimi.
Detto questo ci troviamo davanti ad un film parzialmente riuscito che però in quanto a ritmo narrativo paga le pecche della parte documentaristica ,le finte interviste guidano lo spettatore nello sviluppo delle situazioni ,ma rallentano troppo annoiando i fissati dell’orrore rapido , mentre le parti dei video di repertorio mostrano quello che le interviste ci hanno preparato a vedere,risultando ben ritmante e costruite in modo da farci immergere nella girandola d’azioni sempre più inquietanti che ruotano intorno al team di scienziati e militari.
Un buon film catalogabile come horror soft ,sufficiente per una serata dell’orrore senza molto splatter o violenza ,ma di sicuro non uno di quei film che lascerà il segno per gli anni a venire.
