Quanti di voi gamer hanno mai sentito parlare di questo Wowow project? penso pochissimi,eppure era un progetto portato avanti da una multinazionale dell’epoca passata chiamata Taito, una casa in grado di regalarci perle indimenticabili come Space Invaders, Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Operation Wolf, Puzzle Bobble che hanno invaso la fantasia dei giocatori negli anni 70,80 e inizio dei 90.
Quello che non si sapeva era che la Taito aveva iniziato a pensare ad una propria consolle della quale si hanno le prime informazioni al Tokyo Toy Show nel 1992,la periferica casalinga avrebbe dovuto avere caratteristiche innovative,un hardware di gioco basato su un lettore CD-ROM ed un ricevitore satellitare in grado di ricevere giochi in streaming tramite satellite come fossero programmi TV,totalmente visionario per l’epoca,dotata della stessa potenza audio e grafica di un normale cabinato dell’epoca,e dal tipico aspetto delle consolle ora vintage.
L’ingegnere responsabile del progetto Wowow era Yukiharu Sambe,il quale ha dichiarato che pesanti fattori hanno fatto si che il progetto naufragasse prima di vedere la fine del tunnel,uno dei limiti era la velocità di trasmissione dei dati non sufficiente che avrebbe portato a lunghe attese anche solo per il download di un gioco relativamente piccolo,oltre a questo c’era il fattore costo elevato,ad inizio 90 non era certo facile mettere nello stesso device un ricevitore satellitare e una consolle dei videogame,sarebbe diventato tutto troppo costoso.
Un idea folle e fuori dal tempo,di cui rimane ben poco visto che la consolle non ha mai superato la fase di prototipo,solo qualche foto sgranata e rovinata dal tempo di un tentativo che se fosse andato a buon fine avrebbe forse rivoluzionato totalmente il mondo del videogaming (pensate solo che la PS1 è del 1994) .
